This answer is YES! But only for approved drives.
- The drive from home to your main business location, such as an office or store, is not deductible
- The drive from your office or store to other business locations, such as to call on clients, back to your main place of business is deductible
- If your home office is your main business location, then trips from home to other business locations are deductible
Business use of Personal Vehicle Deduction
If you want to claim a % of your personal vehicle expenses as a business deduction, you must track 2 mileages - both the total miles driven and the business-only miles driven. With these 2 totals we can determine the % of business use of your personal vehicle.
Once we have the % of business use, we can then deduct that % of the vehicle's expenses as a business deduction i.e fuel, auto insurance, repairs, cleaning expenses, loan interest, lease payment, etc
The IRS has a special process for this, see Intro to Accountable Plans
NOTE for tracking miles we love, use and recommend the free version of the mileIQ's mobile app, but you don't need anything fancy. You can certainly track miles on paper.
